10 Things To Do When You Are Feeling Down

Any time you’re feeling down, you have two options:

1. Keep doing what you’re doing, or

2. Do something to try and pick yourself back up.

Sometimes, the 2nd option isn’t so easy, though. Here are 10 things you can do when you’re not feeling your best to get that smile back on your face.

Stop being so hard on yourself

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves. While it’s a great to always want to achieve more, sometimes you need to sit back and reflect on all the good things you have going on right now.

So when you’re feeling down, think about the things in life you’re grateful for. Focus on what you have, not what you don’t. Stop putting so much pressure on yourself.

Be content with who you are right now at this

moment. Remember, happiness is a choice.

Take deep breaths

Focusing on your breathing may not sound like much, but it can really help if you’re feeling down. Spend a few minutes focusing on nothing except your breath. Take long, slow breaths and get rid of all negative thoughts on each exhale. I personally find it hard sometimes to just focus on breathing when anxiety is too strong. Do something that occupies you while relaxing you and putting your mind at ease. This will help you forget about why you felt sad in the first place and enjoy the present moment again.

Get up and move

One of the best ways to pick yourself up when you’re having a tough day is to get off your booty and do some exercise.

If you don’t have time for a full workout, go outside and take a walk. Don’t just stay in bed and feel sorry for yourself. Get up, get moving and get over it.

Surround yourself with people you love

I find that family and friends is the best medicine when you have the blues. Even if you can’t see them in person, pick up the phone and call someone you love. Sometimes all you need is someone one you care about to listen to you and help you get some stuff off your chest. Someone special to you will always have the power to simply make you smile and forget all your worries.

Find a way to laugh

If you feel sad, remember that sadness is temporary. It’s one tiny moment out of the thousands you will experience in your life. You are strong! You have the ability to shift your thoughts and pick yourself up. Maybe start by watching your favorite funny show, movie, or video online.

Spend time with animals

Pets are therapeutic and they are smart. They can sense when you’re sad.

Even if you don’t have a dog, cat, or other pet, you might have a friend who does. So try spending some time around animals and watch your stress fade away.

Do something spontaneous and exciting

You may not feel like doing much when you’re down. But one of the best ways to free your mind is to go out and do something totally spontaneous.

Go visit a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Go to your favorite store and treat yourself to a new outfit. Create some excitement in your life.

Read something inspirational

Words have the power to heal and pick you back up when you’re down. Pick up an inspiring book, go online and search for inspirational blogs or watch a speech from a leader you admire. I personally love to go on youtube and listen to Gary Vee’s videos.

Get some work done

Here’s an easy way to take your mind off negative thoughts. Whether it’s your job or working on a project you’re passionate about, getting work done will help you feel productive and free up your mind.

Eat something healthy

Guess what most people eat when they feel down? Junk food! We can all agree that when you eat crap, you end up feeling like crap. Do the opposite and grab a healthy snack and your body will thank you.
